The taxonomic status of several well known species belonging to the genus Amphidinium (Dinophyceae) has been re-examined. Studies in culture and observations on the micro-anatomy of these organisms suggest that the number of species can be reduced to two, A. klebsii and A. carterae. They may be distinguished on the basis of fundamental differences in chloroplast morphology.  相似文献

A new snake-eel,Apterichtus keramanus, is described on the basis of a single 276-mm TL specimen trawled from the coast of Kerama Islands, Okinawa Prefecture, Japan. The species is unique in the genus in having the posterior nostril opening entirely inside the mouth and a dark band running from the anteroventral margin of the eye to the upper lip.  相似文献

We report the occurrence of a freshwater medusa from a laboratory aquarium in Ranchi, Bihar, India. The consistent emergence of these medussae coincided with sunny days after heavy and prolonged rainfall in the months of August to October. The material showed similarity with Limnocnide indica Annandale and L. nepalensis Dumont but differed in many respects, and is given the status of a distinct species, Limnocnida biharensis n.sp.Author to whom all correspondence should be addressed.Author to whom all correspondence should be addressed.  相似文献

The name Rhodospirillum salexigens, spec. nov., was proposed for the strain WS 68, isolated by W. R. Sistrom at the Oregon coast from salt water. The spiral-shaped phototrophically or chemotrophically growing, salt demanding bacterium contains intracytoplasmic membranes arranged parallel to the cytoplasmic membrane. Bacteriochlorophyll a and spirilloxanthin are the major pigments. Growth occurs between 20 and 45°C at a neutral pH. The DNA base composition was 64 mol % guanine plus cytosine. The cell wall contains peptidoglycan and proteins but no glycolipids.  相似文献

A novel thermophilic spore-forming anaerobic microorganism (strain Ab9) able to grow on citrus pectin and polygalacturonic acid (pectate) was isolated from a thermal spa in Italy. The newly isolated strain grows optimally at 70°C with a growth rate of 0.23 h−1 with pectin and 0.12 h−1 with pectate as substrates. Xylan, starch, and glycogen are also utilized as carbon sources and thermoactive xylanolytic (highest activity at 70°–75°C), amylolytic as well as pullulolytic enzymes (highest activity at 80°–85°C) are formed. Two thermoactive pectate lyases were isolated from the supernatant of a 300-l culture of isolate Ab9 after growth on citrus pectin. The two enzymes (lyases a and b) were purified to homogeneity by ammonium sulfate treatment, anion exchange chromatography, hydrophobic chromatography and finally by preparative gel electrophoresis. After sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS) gel electrophoresis, lyase a appeared as a single polypeptide with a molecular mass of 135 000 Da whereas lyase b consisted of two subunits with molecular masses of 93 000 Da and 158 000 Da. Both enzymes displayed similar catalytic properties with optimal activity at pH 9.0 and 80°C. The enzymes were very stable at 70°C and at 80°C with a half-life of more than 60 min. The maximal activity of the purified lyases was observed with orange pectate (100%) and pectate-sodium salt (90%), whereas pectin was attacked to a much lesser extent (50%). The K m values of both lyases for pectate and citrus pectin were 0.5 g·l−1 and 5.0 g·l−1, respectively. After incubation with polygalacturonic acid, mono-, di-, and tri-galacturonate were detected as final products. A 2.5-fold increase of activity was obtained when pectate lyases were incubated in the presence of 1 mM Ca2+. The addition of 1 mM ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) resulted in complete inhibition of the enzymes. These heat-stable enzymes represent the first pectate-lyases isolated and characterized from a thermophilic anaerobic bacterium. On the basis of the results of the 16S rRNA sequence comparisons and the observed phenotypic differences, we propose strain Ab9 as a new species of Thermoanaerobacter, namely Thermoanaerobacter italicus sp. nov. In this Editorial, I would like to provide our readers with a brief mid-year update about our activities and efforts to bring together researchers working on intercellular signaling proteins at international meetings. The roots emerged about 20 years ago in the discovery of three genes originally designated cyr61, ctgf, and nov. The proteins encoded by these genes were first proposed to constitute a family of proteins (CCN) which now comprises 6 members (CCN1, CCN2, CCN3, CCN4-6) including the wisp proteins. These proteins were recognized to share a striking structural organization and a high degree of identity although they exhibited quite distinct biological properties. After historical considerations regarding the reasons for using the CCN acronym, and how the ICCNS publishing landscape that drove the ICCNS from Cell Communication and Signaling to the Journal of Cell Communication and Signaling, this short update will focus on the 7th edition of the International Workshop on the CCN family of genes to be held in Nice, Oct 16–19, 2013.  相似文献

A new raphidophyte flagellate is described from the river mouth of the Daintree River, north-east Australia where there are extensive mangrove forests. The organism has two distinct phases: a club-shaped motile form, and a more or less spherical benthic non-motile form. The motile cell is metabolic and possesses 10–20 chloroplasts. The chloroplasts are imbricated, somewhat reminiscent of roofing tiles. A unique structure has been found at the posterior end of the cell. It is a tubular invagination, which consists of a single membrane supported by many small flattened vesicles. In addition, the structure is surrounded by many fibril-containing vesicles. The tubular invagination is different from both the contractile vacuoles and the pusules of dinoflagellates in both behavior and structure. Based on the possession of these unique features, it is concluded that the this mangrove flagellate should be described as a new species in a new genus and the name Haramonas dimorpha Horiguchi gen. et sp. nov. is proposed.  相似文献
